Why do my iPhone photos show up as HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) has been the default photo format on iPhone since iOS 11, it keeps the same quality as JPEG at roughly half the file size. Most browsers and a lot of Windows software can't open it directly, which is why a HEIC photo often just won't preview or upload on non-Apple devices.
Does this upload my photos anywhere to convert them?
No. The HEIC decoding happens entirely in your browser using WebAssembly, nothing is sent anywhere.
